Infection Control Measures

This blog addresses the Education Sector’s apprehensions concerning future outbreaks of infections like Scarlet Fever and Group A Strep.

In recent times, the UK Health Security Agency has expressed heightened concerns about the surge in lower respiratory tract infections caused by Group A Strep in certain children. Regrettably, this surge has resulted in severe illness and, tragically, multiple fatalities.

What is Group A Streptococci Bacterium (GAS)?

Group Strep A is a type of bacteria commonly found on the skin, throat and other parts of the body where they typically reside without causing issues. However, these bacteria can enter through inhalation, ingestion or skin abrasions. Although, Group A Strep infections usually lead to mild illnesses like sore throat or skin infections, it’s important to note that Strep A is also the primary cause of Scarlet Fever.
